Nice Girls Finish Last In The Workplace
I used to be very naive (and still am) in my thinking. I admit up until the last couple of years, I used to think everyone had a heart and wanted to look out for those around them. Crazy and naive, I know. I’ve matured and realized that is far from the case.
It’s a “dog eat dog” world out there in the working world. . . and most people are only looking out for numero uno. Sadly, nice girls and guys usually finish last. It’s a tough lesson to learn.
I’ve had many sleepless nights after crappy days hoping to change this dog eat dog dynamic. But, the more I recognize it, the more I am able to adapt and find ways to get through it with class and tact.
I like to think that I’m a relatively nice and easygoing person. Looking back, I’m probably too nice. Because, being the “nice” guy or girl in the workplace sadly doesn’t cut it. I’ve had to learn this the hard way. You do something nice for a co-worker and then they shine and steal the credit from you. Shit happens.
It’s incredibly frustrating. When someone steals your idea or takes over your project, it simply sucks. It never gets easier. For myself, I have a bad tendency to internalize it and take it personally. Looking back, this is probably the worst thing to do. Instead, it’s important to work ten times harder to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
