How to Escape the Traditional 9 to 5 Life
There are many ways to break free from the traditional 9 to 5 grind, especially if you’ve decided that it isn’t for you. Maybe you want to break free from a boring work routine without completely switching lanes, or maybe you are looking for an entirely different change of pace. Whatever the case may be, it is possible to start over and try something new.
Become Your Own Boss
It is never too late to change, but if you can come up with a clear idea about your goals and what kind of lifestyle you are interested in early on, then it definitely doesn’t hurt.
Many find the idea of being an entrepreneur an appealing and interesting career path. If you don’t love the idea of a 9-5 life, then this could be the right course for you.
When you become your own boss, you will live a completely different life. You will have more control over your day, but it does take a lot of drive. If you are choosing this kind of life because you simply want to sleep in and work from home, then you need to reconsider.
An entrepreneur may gain more control over their daily schedule, but nine times out of ten, they also need to work a whole lot more than others. A good book for any aspiring entrepreneur is The 4-Hour Workweek, by Tim Ferriss, which can shed a new light on things — but don’t let the title fool you.
Find a New Place to Live
Sometimes it is not about the job itself. Sometimes it is about the setting. If you spend years getting a good education, but don’t want to stay behind in your hometown, then it is time to get up and move.
While it is possible to pack a suitcase and go wherever you want, you may be unsure about how to start a new career path. If you don’t know where to start, then go online or see if you can find an employment agency.
For example, if you have a health background, then you can try medical staffing agencies. Or, if your area of expertise is in another area, then look that up and see if there are any agencies relevant to you. You may be surprised by how much help is out there once you start to look for it.
Start Freelancing
Another way to escape the traditional 9-5 life is by transitioning to freelancing. Full-time employment offers a certain stability that you won’t find as a freelancer, but although you won’t be guaranteed the same paycheck every month, it does have its benefits.
Freelancing gives you flexibility and freedom. You will be free to decide when you work, where you work, and who you work with. When you work from home, you can run your day how you want to. It also means you can control your own sleep schedule and eat breakfast when it suits you.
It is important to keep in mind though that you will still answer to other people as a freelancer. While it may be great to not have just one boss, your various clients will be the ones that you will have to answer to.
