Top Tips for Looking After Your Human Hair Wig
Just as you would take the time to wash and nourish your natural hair it is important that you also take time out to give your wig the TLC it deserves: taking care of your wig ensures it will look as good as possible for as long as possible. Taking care of your wig isn’t the same as taking care of human hair though: it requires a little more love and attention to keep it in tip top condition.
There are a wide variety of different wigs, and wig brands on the market. Whether you are wearing a short and stylish Amore wig, or long and luscious Ellen Wille wig, you will need to know exactly how to take care of your wig to ensure you’re always looking as stylish as possible. Here are a few top tips for proper wig maintenance:
Shampoo and Condition Your Wig
The most important thing to remember when washing and conditioning your wig is to use a specialist shampoo and conditioner designed specifically for wig you are wearing; Revlon provide an extensive range of products for their wigs, for example. You should also gentle comb through your wig before you wet it and apply the shampoo to prevent it from forming tangles and knots that would be difficult to remove. If you find the thought of washing your wig yourself too daunting then why not consider taking it to the hairdressers? Most hairdressers will be happy to wash, dry, and even cut your human hair wig for you, saving you the hassle.
Dry Your Wig
Whilst it can be tempting to speed up the drying process by using a hairdryer, the high heat of a hairdryer is never recommended for either synthetic or natural wigs. This could damage the fibres of your wig and force it out of shape, making it unwearable. Instead the drying process will take time and patience. Towel dry your wig liberally (but gently) to remove as much moisture as possible, then place it on a wig stand and wait. This process could take between 3-4 hours, but most savvy wig wearers leave their wigs to dry overnight so that they can dry thoroughly in a low maintenance way.
Style Your Wig
Finally, once your wig is clean and dry it’s time for you to style it to ensure it looks as great as possible! The first tip for proper styling is to buy a hairbrush specifically for wigs: conventional hairbrushes are too harsh and may damage your hair piece. This same rule applies to styling products too: leave the mousse and hairspray to one side and instead look for wig friendly hair products that will be gentle on the fibres of your piece. Once you have all the products you need it’s time to let go and have fun! You can experiment with different styles on your wig, just as you would with natural hair.
