Why You Should Consider an Empowering Career in Logistics
Transportation is one of our biggest enterprises – thus, logistics follows suit. The U.S. spent an estimated $1.48 trillion on logistics in 2015. You may not have considered it, but logistics could present you with amazing career opportunities. This article will help reveal to you why logistics could be an amazing field for you to explore.
There are more positions than you think
There is, of course, the obvious option of taking control of the vehicles themselves. If you’re transporting between 10,000 to 26,000 pounds then you’ll need a special license. Otherwise, the requirements for entry are very open. Outside of this, there are opportunities in pretty much any area you can think of. A lot of people only think about the driving aspects – but there’s so much more. Marketing, finance, data analyzing, consultation, management, engineering, warehouse operations… There are so many opportunities open to people across all levels of education and experience. This field needs people from all across the skill spectrum.
More candidates are always needed
A lot of people don’t really consider logistics when they’re job-hunting. This could have something to do with the point I made in the previous section: that people tend to think of very narrow job descriptions when they think of logistics. Logistics companies tend to get fewer applications for key positions than other sorts of companies. This means that you may find it’s easier to break into a high-level position in logistics than in other fields. Make no mistake: the requirements will be demanding. But if you can handle it and can earn a supply chain management degree, you’ve got a good shot.
It’s high-pressure – and extremely important
If you’re looking for an empowering career, then something in logistics can offer you just that. Think about it: there are few businesses out there that are more important to the world than logistics. Managing the transportation of people and goods across the globe means that your business is extremely valued by both the people and the government. To build a career in logistics is to build one of the most powerful careers you could engage in.
There’s more money in it than ever
The average salary of a worker in logistics has been increasing at a faster rate than most other fields. The average salary of a logistician in 2002 was around $53,000 – not bad for the time. Ten years later, the average salary was closer to $75,000. The top 10% of earners in logistics earn over $100,000 a year. The average salary can depend on the state market for this career. Consider Washington, where a logistician earns, on average, over $90,000 a year. Ka-ching, indeed!
It’s not just a men’s club
There’s a stereotype that logistics has always been the arena of men. This has been the result of an image problem more than it has been that of a discrimination problem. But the field is becoming more diverse all the time. While there have always been powerful women in this field, there are now more than ever. Logistics could be the perfect place to get your foot in the door of the business elite.
