Yes You DO Deserve A Barbados Getaway Vacation
I could go off on a tangent about how challenging 2016 has been. But hey, let’s not even go there! Suffice to say for all our varied reasons, we deserve a reprieve. I’m thinking a Barbados getaway vacation might be just the perfect way to escape for a bit and do some re-balancing as we plan for a great 2017.
Why Barbados?
With so many options of places to visit in our ever-shrinking world, why Barbados? Let’s start with the fact that it’s a Caribbean paradise. That alone should be ample enticement. Of course, there are all those Barbados luxury resorts to go along with this tropical wonderland. But what else does this island jewel have to lure you forth?
The Beaches
The island of Barbados is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 km (14 mi) in width. So, being an island, simple math tells you there’s beach adventure enough to capture your attention for a good long time. Of course, there are the must-see beaches that you’ll want to include in your itinerary.
Bathsheba Beach
Located on the west coast, Bathsheba Beach is a haven for photo bugs and water lovers alike. While the surfing is said to be world-class and the beaches and rock formations beg for their share of selfies, the water is a bit risky for swimming. So it’s best to enjoy the beach, or stay on top of the water, not in it.
Dover Beach
To the south you’ll find Dover Beach. Dover is perfect for all the water sports and swimming imaginable. While amazingly less crowded, Dover Beach has all the amenities you’d want. With the array of vendors, equipment rentals, and nearby restaurants and hotels, there’s everything you’ll need close at hand. Oh, and don’t forget those wonderful beach bars, and the lifeguards. Not necessarily in that order.
The Attractions
While the beaches offer more than enough reason to heed to the call to Barbados, there’s wonder that awaits elsewhere, also. So when you’re ready to get out of the sun a little, don’t overlook these awesome opportunities to go deep. Very deep.
Harrison’s Cave
Most visitors who have seen it will tell you that Harrison’s Cave is a part of Barbados you don’t want to miss. Located pretty much in the middle of the island, it’s a natural wonder that rivals any you’ve seen. And if you’ve never ventured into this version of the “down under” what better place to do so?
Atlantis Submarines
When you’ve had enough of the sand, rocks, and water up close and personal, here’s an opportunity you won’t find just anywhere. How about an experience in a unique underwater adventure in a real submarine? There are several options available, including night time dives, that venture down as low as 130 feet under the surface.
The Culture
One of my favorite parts of traveling is the experience of local culture. And when it comes to that, Barbados has plenty to offer. Most people have at least a vague association of Barbados and rum, and the history and culture of Barbados is very much interwoven with the manufacture of rum.
St. Nicholas Abbey
To get a sense of how plantations, rum, and local social life has evolved, there is no better way than St. Nicholas Abbey. With a museum, tours, and of course the requisite samples of to-die-for rum, you’ll be primed and ready for a night of partying. Yes, one must not forget the famous nightlife of Barbados.
Bars and Nightclubs
Barbados is known for its nightlife. The south coast especially has a plentiful variety of rum shops, cocktail bars that range from glitzy to comfy, and full-on nightclubs. So whether your pleasure for party time is more subdued or wild and crazy, you’ll find a place to express yourself.
